Geography

The Children’s House program, for 3-6 year olds, invites children to explore the world. Beginning with a tactile globe, children experience land and water. Then, they learn about the continents, and the countries within each continent. Many children create maps of each continent with the countries and seas labeled.

Children understand concepts of island, lake, peninsula, cape, bay and other land forms, because they actually create those formations in the classroom. Many students will proceed to draw and write these land forms in a book, which we treat as a reference work.

Because our children experience geography through puzzle maps, tactile globes, push-pin maps, land form materials, they are exploring and understanding rather than memorizing. This experiential learning creates real understanding, and genuine interest in the investigations.
